1. The Physiology of Sleep Initiation

Sleep onset latency is the time it takes to transition from full wakefulness to the first stages of non-REM sleep. A healthy sleep latency ranges from 15 to 20 minutes. Falling asleep in less than 5 minutes suggests a state of chronic sleep deprivation, while taking longer than 30 minutes indicates sleep initiation difficulties, often due to high evening stress, light exposure, or late-day caffeine.

Sleep initiation is regulated by two main systems: the circadian drive (regulated by melatonin and SCN clocks) and the homeostatic sleep drive (driven by the accumulation of adenosine in the brain). If evening cortisol is elevated, it keeps the body in an active state, blocking melatonin release and extending sleep latency.
