Light is the primary zeitgeber (external cue) that calibrates the human biological clock. The SCN is highly sensitive to light signals, using them to anchor body temperature, hormone, and sleep cycles. Exposing your eyes to bright light in the morning shifts your sleep phase earlier, making it easier to wake up refreshed and fall asleep at night. This is known as a phase advance, and it is a key strategy for managing circadian rhythms.

Retinal ganglion cells are particularly sensitive to blue wavelengths, which are abundant in natural morning sunlight. When morning light hits these receptors, the SCN signals the body to halt melatonin production and start releasing cortisol. This morning hormonal shift increases alertness, heart rate, and body temperature, preparing you for the day.
